Samsung (KS:005930) is set to collaborate with AMD (NASDAQ:AMD), Qualcomm (NASDAQ:QCOM), and Revegnus on the development of FidelityFX Super Resolution (FSR) software for its upcoming flagship Galaxy S series phones. This includes both Exynos and Snapdragon-powered Galaxy devices, specifically targeting the AI-enhanced Galaxy S24 series. The move comes as Samsung aims to rectify the performance issues encountered during its initial attempt at raytracing with the Exynos 2200 and its AMD RDNA-based Xclipse 920 GPU.

The FSR technology, already present on AMD Radeon GPUs, select games, and handhelds like the Steam Deck and ROG Ally, is designed to compete with NVIDIA's DLSS technology used in RTX GPUs but on mobile platforms. It employs upscaling and frame generation techniques to enhance framerates in compatible games. Unlike NVIDIA's DLSS, FSR does not utilize AI, but Samsung plans to leverage AI for mobiles to generate additional high-quality frames, create extra pixels, and improve image quality.

The forthcoming Galaxy S24 is expected to feature FSR technology as reported by AjuNews. By reducing game graphics resolution and then using AI to upscale it, FSR enhances frame rates, positioning it as a strong competitor to Nvidia (NASDAQ:NVDA)'s Deep Learning Super Sampling (DLSS). With the incorporation of FSR and advanced graphics capabilities in next-generation chips such as the Exynos 2400 or Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 (which already features Game Super Resolution or GSR), devices could deliver impressive gaming performance even when running computationally demanding raytracing. Raytracing is a technology that creates lifelike reflections and shadows in gaming environments.

Similar technologies, including MetalFX Upscaling and FSR, are already utilized in devices like the Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) A17 Pro for smoother raytracing gameplay. The inclusion of these technologies in Samsung's upcoming Galaxy S24 series signifies the company's commitment to improving the gaming experience on its devices.
