Diodes latest automotive buck converter comes with I²C interface for enhanced POL efficiency
Diodes has launched the AP61406Q, a 5.5V, 4A synchronous buck converter designed to optimise Automotive point-of-load (POL) systems.
The device features an I²C interface, enabling programmable control for improved flexibility and efficiency in modern vehicle Electronics.
The AP61406Q targets applications such as infotAInment systems, instrument clusters, telematics, and advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS), where compact design and high power density are critical.
Its I²C 3.0-compatible serial interface supports clock rates up to 3.4MHz and allows configuration of key parameters, including switching modes (PFM/PWM), operating frequencies (1MHz to 2.5MHz), and output currents ranging from 1A to 4A. Voltage output can be adjusted in 20mV increments, and the device provides fault status reporting for enhanced system monitoring.
Engineered for high-temperature automotive environments, the AP61406Q is housed in a W-QFN1520-8/SWP (Type UX) package. It incorporates a proprietary gate driver scheme to minimise switching node ringing without affecting MOSFET performance, reducing high-frequency EMI emissions. The converter operates across an input voltage range of 2.3V to 5.5V and integrates low-resistance MOSFETs - 75mΩ on the high side and 33mΩ on the low side—for efficient step-down DC-DC conversion. Its constant on-time (COT) control simplifies design by reducing external component requirements and ensuring low output ripple.
Additional features include a multi-function enable input for mode selection, supporting low quiescent current (20µA) in PFM mode or consistent ripple in PWM mode. The device also offers an accurate power-good indicator with a built-in pull-up resistor and ±5% window comparator, helping reduce bill-of-materials costs.
Safety and reliability are addressed through comprehensive protection mechanisms, including short-circuit Current Sensing, undervoltage lockout, input overvoltage protection, current limiting, and thermal shutdown.
A standard version, AP61406, is also available for industrial and consumer applications.
