STMicroElectronics has introduced two new Automotive‑grade isolated gate drivers designed to support higher switching frequencies and improved efficiency in electric and hybrid vehicle systems.

The STGAP2SA and STGAP2HSA devices deliver a 4A output with a response time of 60ns, enabling greater power density in space‑constrAIned automotive modules.

The new gate drivers, part of ST’s wider STGAP family, are suitable for controlling IGBTs and silicon MOSFETs operating with high‑voltage rails up to 1200V. Both devices can source or sink up to 4A at voltages of up to 26V, making them adaptable for unipolar and bipolar driving requirements.

Qualified to AEC‑Q100 standards, the drivers are designed for a broad range of vehicle systems including DC/DC converters, pumps, fans, heaters, e‑compressors and on‑board chargers. Their isolation ratings and robust design also position them for use in EV charging stations, industrial inverters and motor drives.

To support safe and reliable operation, the devices incorporate several integrated protection features which include: under‑voltage lockout, an output safe state during power‑up and power‑down, Miller clamp technology to prevent unintended switching, thermal shutdown, and a self‑monitoring watchdog that secures the output if communication from the low‑voltage side is lost. A low‑power standby mode is activated when both inputs are held high.

Both models meet UL 1577 isolation standards. The STGAP2SA, supplied in a standard SO‑8 package, provides transient and surge isolation ratings of up to 4800V. The wide‑body STGAP2HSA meets IEC 60747‑17 requirements for basic insulation and offers a 6000V surge isolation rating, supported by an 8mm creepage and clearance distance.

Evaluation boards are available to assist with development. The EVALSTGAP2SAC features the STGAP2SA, while the EVALSTGAP2HSAC supports high‑isolation designs using the STGAP2HSA.

As automotive electrification advances, components capable of supporting higher switching speeds, increased power density and enhanced safety have become essential. Isolated gate drivers play a critical role in enabling efficient power conversion while maintaining the galvanic isolation required in high‑voltage systems.

STMicroelectronics says both the STGAP2SA and STGAP2HSA are now in full production, offering manufacturers new options for building more compact and reliable modules across both automotive and industrial sectors.
