ST presents high‑side driver designed to withstand severe automotive voltage transients
STMicroElectronics has introduced a new four‑channel Automotive high‑side driver capable of mAIntaining operation during significant voltage disturbances, including cold‑crank conditions that can dip as low as 2.7V.
The VNQ9050LAJ operates from a minimum of 4V and is designed to enhance vehicle reliability in demanding electrical environments.
The device complies with the latest LV124 requirements, one of the automotive industry’s most stringent benchmarks for electrical and electronic component robustness. It is intended for 12V ground‑connected loads and supports both 3V and 5V logic inputs.
Manufactured using ST’s VIpower‑M09 technology, the VNQ9050LAJ delivers low typical on‑resistance of 50mΩ, improving energy efficiency and reducing power losses.
As an intelligent power switch, the driver includes a comprehensive set of diagnostic and protective features for resistive, capacitive and inductive loads. A high‑precision on‑chip current‑mirror circuit enables accurate load‑Current Sensing through an external pin, allowing engineers to convert the measured current into a voltage for continuous monitoring.
The accuracy of the sensing circuit enables a wide range of diagnostic capabilities, including real‑time load‑current feedback, overload alerts, short‑to‑ground detection, thermal‑shutdown indication, and OFF‑state open‑load identification. A sense‑enable pin also makes it possible for multiple devices to share a single external sense resistor, helping to reduce the bill of materials.
The VNQ9050LAJ incorporates protection mechanisms to withstand abnormal electrical and thermal conditions. Features include an overvoltage clamp, thermal‑transient limiting, configurable latch‑off on overtemperature or power limitation, and a dedicated fault‑reset pin. Additional safeguards cover electrostatic discharge, loss of ground, loss of supply voltage, and reverse-battery protection.
The VNQ9050LAJ is already in production and offered in a thermally enhanced Power‑SSO16 package.
